Shocking U.S. Crime Stats

Postby UnderDude » Wed Apr 15, 2015 12:13 am

In 2012.....

Number of people arrested for violent crimes - 534,974

Number of people arrested for drug possession - 1,531,025
(663,032 of those arrests were for marijuana)

Couldn't our resources be put to better use? We have the highest incarceration rate of any country on the planet.

In my opinion the war on drugs should be ended and all drugs should be decriminalised. Not that I'm saying it should all be available legally in shops necessarily (also not necessarily saying they shouldn't be either) but people shouldn't be treated as criminals for using them.

Weed, however, at the very least should be legalised, commercially grown, sold wherever you can buy tobacco and taxed. How much revenue has been made by Colorado's legalisation of it? Quite a lot from what I read.

Police resources are wasted on things like this. A small, but relevant, example was a place in the US where mushrooms grew wild and they had a couple of cops patrolling the areas where they grew to stop people from picking them. I mean really, how fucking ridiculous and wasteful is that? Diverting resources to stop people from picking wild mushrooms.

They need to stop worrying about drug possession and concentrate on manufacturers and importers. I mean seriously, arrest someone for pot? C'mon people. Pot doesn't kill. Opiates kill, meth kills, cocaine kills, abused prescription pain killers kill.
But we arrest and jail more people for pot possession than violent offenses? Sounds lazy to me.

It's because marijuana is the easiest to detect. If you are behind a car with people smoking it, you will most likely smell it. So, they run the plates and watch for mistakes or vehicular problems and voila: easy ticket at the least or even possibly a bust for weed or even more! Other than that, they have to hunt for dealers of whatever which takes a little more work.

Weed smokers would do themselves a favor by just smoking at home or indoors somewhere. That or eat it in something at the same places. As long as they don't attract attention by being rowdy, they will be fine- look at the Colorado system, it pretty much works the same way in practice. Marijuana is the least of the problems and can easily be handled like alcohol. States can get more revenue and save themselves a lot of wasted time for the police as stated earlier. Worry about the REAL drug problems and the real crimes out there!

There are 2.4 million Americans in prison. It costs almost $80 billion dollars a year to incarcerate them all.

Maryland (population 5.9 million) has more people in prison than the entire country of Iraq
(population 31.9 million).

Ohio (population 11.6 million) has more people in prison than the entire country of Pakistan (population 193.1 million).

The US accounts for 5% of the world's population but nearly 25% of the world's prison population.

NYC PD conducted nearly 700,000 stop and frisk searches in 2011.

There are more black people under "correctional supervision" now than there were in slavery in 1850.

In 1980 there were 3,000 SWAT raids in the US. In 2013 there were over 80,000.

Illegal immigrants make up nearly 30% of the prison population in the US.

According to CNN, in 2014.....

Law enforcement killed:
414 whites
311 unreported race
233 blacks
138 hispanics
15 asians

Can someone explain to me how the hell a murder victim's race goes unreported?

Did you see Men in Black? Aliens seem to pop when they get shot.

It's amazing how many people are in jail.
According to your statistics more white people were killed by police that any other group.
So why are blacks rioting every time some thug gets killed?

Ratio of blacks to white in the country per population means that per 1000 more blacks are shot. Of course it could be due to more black criminals per 1000.

Any case If just stopped useing prison sentence for stupid crimes like weed it would save a lot of cash.
