MGP Rye Comparison by Bottler Brands

Years ago Seagrams laid down some very nice 95% Rye 5% malted barley Rye whiskey.
It was intended to be flavoring for blended Canadian Whiskey.
Due to the difference in conditions this could not be made in Canada.
Seagram's was broken up and the Laurenceburg Distillery was sold to LDI who in turn got in financial trouble and sold.
MGP, Midwest Grain Products bought it and decided not to sell their own brands but instead to sell product new and aged to other who would brand and sell.
This is the source of this wonderful Rye whiskey that I like so much.
There are others than the three we compared but in my area they are the most common.

My Brother and I did a side by side comparison of three MGP Ryes.
1. George Dickel Rye 90 proof Sugar Maple Charcoal cold filtered no age statement.
2. Bullet Rye 90 proof no age statement.
3. Old Scout Rye 99 proof 7 years old.

Dickel was the lightest in color, Old Scout was the darkest.
Dickel had the mildest taste, Old Scout had the most intense flavor.

Price point
George Dickell Rye - $19.99 per 750 ml.
Bulleit Rye $24.99 per 750 ml.
Smooth Ambler - Old Scout Rye $35.99 per 750 ml.

Bullet was middle of the road on price taste, and color.
This positioning probably places it as the optimum choice for most people.
If you want mild taste or low price George Dickel should be what you reach for.
If taste and kick attracts you then go for Smooth Ambler.
If you are not sure then go for Bulleit.

Personally I either choose for taste or price.
If I am cutting corners then Dickel it is.
If I had a good week then Smooth Ambler all the way.

In actuality I find all three of them very enjoyable.
You cannot go wrong regardless of which you choose.

All that being said, if you are a fan of MGP Rye you owe it to yourself to seek out some Smooth Ambler Rye.
I have just finished the bottle I bought to sample it and am going to get one for the shelf tomorrow.
