I've never had a problem cutting rope with a smooth blade.

Nor have I, but I think you need to be cutting a truly staggering amount before a difference can be noticed

Depends on the rope and the size.
Serrations will make a difference especially if there is a load on the rope.

More importantly for a lot of people the serrations will still cut when the knife is so dull it is more of an ice-pick than a knife.
I don't let my knives get that dull and I bet you don't either.

How about the knives they use in The Walking Dead, talk about a lot of skull poking!

Half serrated blades are much better for cutting plastic straps and canvas.

Nope. I keep mine sharp just like I keep my rifle clean. It's kind of a matter of personal pride to me.

I get that.
Other than a few utility blades and the kitchen knives my wife uses my knives will shave.
Every time I go shooting I clean my guns.

A few years ago I bought a Glock that was so dirty it would not function reliably.
The guy gave me a great price on what he thought was a lemon.
A total strip and a deep cleaning and guess what?
Problem solved.

Guys in my platoon regularly come to me for knife maintenance. I'm apparently the only one of us who brought a sharpener with us.

Wow, didn't they learn anything? Maybe you should get a promotion for taking care of your platoon mates! 8-)
