So, moving right along:

Image

The Targe, a Scottish shield that has a number of uses.

It is hefty for defense, be it for frontal attacks or slung on your back for rearward protection. It is also great for smashing and bashing opponents. This was made for me by a friend who regularly attends the Highland games at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire USA. They are VERY durable, my only wish is that it had a center spike as well!

P.S: The mark on its upper middle section is where somebody lunged at it with a bayonet mounted on a Brown Bess musket circa late 1700s while I was holding it- took it like it was nothing!

It is made kind of like plywood in a way from what he told me. layers of hardwood glued together at right angles to each other and pegged as well covered with leather. They also would be decorated with brass and silver tacks as well, sometimes plates too. A spike could also be fitted to the center, making for an additional hurt to opponents.

As for the weight, I will see if I can find that out for you zombreach! ;)

Ah, the targe shield !

Nice push-away item, but can be grabbed when in close-quarter fighting.

I'd use it in unison with a pistol, the latter in its role as a total weapon.

I'd worry a sword would get embedded in a zed, leaving you unarmed and maybe struggling to get a pistol anyway out of a holster whilst same zed or others are grabbing at the shield.

Wouldn't get too close to zeds, but the targe would protect your left side enough, rather than exposed arm.

Is the phot showing the back upside down ?

No Sir, I am left handed. Had it made for my right arm.

So they used a laminate! Makes for a strong wood bond.

I was thinking about this. What if the edge of the shield was either sharpened or have blades attached to it. This would make it hard for a zombie to grab or hold onto. It would hopefully slice of the fingers.
