As the title says, this section is for the axes, bashers and other types for hand to hand use.

Ok, up first is this old axe:

Image

This was found on some property of my father in laws after he passed away. Don't know how old it is or where it was made, only a very small proof mark of some type. It is made in a similar fashion to medieval polearms with the integral steel sidestraps on it to protect the head from being separated by blade strikes. It is also solidly riveted together in the old fashioned way, somebody put some time into making this axe well. The back spike seems curved a bit much to me but after checking it out with a scale sized skull it would do a nice job of venting a zombie's head very nicely! With or without an edge on it, definitely a viable addition to the armory.

Is it possible it might have been a fire axe?

Hmm, never thought of that. However, I never heard of firemen using smaller axes before. This one is only a little over 21" or 22" at best.

It reminds me of a 19th century fire axe I saw at The Autry Museum in LA.
Very cool!!

I am pretty sure it is a naval boarding axe.
I was looking at pictures this morning and while I didn't see the exact axe the design is right.

Interesting info from you guys there, I never looked into it's origins at all. Given how well made it is, I should have- getting too old, must be slipping.

You may be right Sir, I'm definitely unraveling in multiple directions! :?

So, time for something else:

An East German entrenching spade. Great for digging latrines and smashing beans. Not a surprise that someone had previously sharpened the end and one side of it before. Entrenching tools as weapons have been a timeless classic since WWI, probably never to go away either.

That's why I love the old wooden handle GI issue entrenching tools.
